Ancient Egyptian scribes used wooden palettes, like this one, to hold their ink and brushes. This pallette is based on the extant find seen in the last image which dates to the Middle Kingdom. The design of scribal palettes changed little over time. The kit contains the pallet, 2 reed pens which were typically frayed to on the ends to behave more like brushes, a small sheet of papyrus and the two inks made from lampblack, red earth pigment, and water soluble tree resin.
