The Design and Process for the Original Manuscript
This piece of St. Gertrude, the patron saint of cats, shows her with her typical distaff and spindle and a cat playing with the spindle.
The designs are each drawn with a lead stylus and/or pencil when I feel like cheating, inked with handmade iron gall ink, then gesso is laid down before gilding with 23+ karat gold and painted with egg tempera paint that is handmade with historic pigments, including vermillion, white lead, lapis/ultramarine, various earths and ochers, lampblack, and minium. All of this is on goatskin parchment.
The Prints
Each of these prints is a digital reproduction of the original manuscript and is 4x4 in and is matted to fit in an 8x8 inch frame. Our prints are produced using Epson Claria inks.
